Slipknot

I have failed to find anything current worth writing about so this will be a ranting opinion piece on Slipknot.

Also please note I have added a YouTube search engine, so if you want to check out anything I’ve talk about or anything I suggest, you can!

Ok Slipknot (as seens here) --------->

For all of you who don’t know them, Slipknot are a 9 piece Nu-Metal band from Des Monies Illinois, in America. They once depicted what it meant to metal: angry at the world, brutal to no end with inspiring innovative music that flowed with greatness. With their terrifying masks, overwhelmingly vicious lyrics and painful, disgusting on stage antics they were what children’s nightmares were made of and the answer to a world of overwhelmed, anxious youths. They even came fully equip with a hideous clown who would regularly vomit into his own mask simply for a shock reaction.

They exploded onto the scene in 1999 winning over our hearts with fight anthems such as ‘SIC’, ‘Only one’ and ‘Get this’. They created a new sub-culture of die-hard metal fans called ‘Maggots’. Slipknot then brought us together with ‘Pluse of the maggots’ and ‘New abortion’. They proceeded to teach us to break free from the system with “Heretic Anthem” and “PEOPLE=SHIT”. And finally when we heard those lyrics “Fuck it all, fuck this world, fuck everything that you stand for, don’t belong, don’t exist, don’t give a shit, don’t every judge me!” we knew we weren’t alone in solipsist individualism anymore. We had our leaders, they puked, bled, broke bones and played healing music for us; they lead our legion onto greatness.

WHAT HAPPENED!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?

Slipknot swore they would never sellout! When their record label told them to write something more “radio friendly” they wrote the song “Heratic Anthem” which proceeded to refer to the commercial record label as 666, in other words, Satan. They then refer to themselves as ‘idolized industry killers’. The song ‘I am Hated’ is a song utterly devoted to showing this, they these lyrics with gusto: “we are the anti-caner, we are the only answer” referring to the fake pop-culture of fads as a disease that only they can eradicate. After slamming this message down the throats of ‘the industry’ they started going after bands. They hit commercialized fads bands who wanted to play with them with the song “Get this”. With hard hitting lyrics such as “Music sucks dick…You fucking cunts, get off of my back. I don't wanna do a show with your shitty fuckin' band - You suck, they suck, guess what, get fucked… Local bands (suck these nuts) U.S. bands (suck these nuts) Worldwide bands (suck these nuts) All you bands can suck these fuckin' nuts!...Get this or die! Get this or die! Get this or die!” This was Slipknot’s no nonsense way of getting their point across. However, in the album ‘Subliminal Verses Vol 3’ the world began to get skeptical when we noticed a softening in some of the songs. No problem, they came straight back at the world with a song that pierced hope into every Maggot’s heart, it was an uplifting song that shed light onto a sad time where it looked like Slipknot were going to disband. This song told the Maggots that they [Slipknot] would give their lives for this, that all the Maggots must join together to fight the system, that they would be our leader and they would never change and never leave us. This song had crowds marching and chanting like a well oil Maggot machine. They would scream “do you understand?” and we would scream “YES!” then all together in a beautiful symphony of metal, death pits and adrenaline we would all scream as one “WE WON’T DIE!!!” until our lungs hurt, out throats bled and we almost passed out from exhaustion. This epic song was “Pulse of the Maggots”.

Some where along the line this was all lost and Slipknot disappointed their fans with the release of the fourth album “All hope is gone”. Weeks, days and minutes were counted down all across the world in anticipation of the release of this album. Heart ache struck me when I realised the title was obviously a bad pun about the band, because all hope for them went flying out the window when this album was released. Instead of the brutality, originality and sick; twisted Nu-metal styling’s that only Slipknot could produce, I was faced with a sell out, repetitive, acoustic rock piece of commercialized crap. Sid, the DJ was barely used, taking away one of the main Nu-metal aspects. Joey’s out-of-this-world drumming was reduced to simply beats with basic fills…ok so there was the occasional good solo but nothing like what we were used to. The songs were repetitive, slow and tuned for radio. And what may have been most depressing, Corey, the singer who once stole the hearts of millions of Maggots worldwide sung in almost every song…he sung! I don’t mean “Wait and bleed” singing or even “Vermillion” singing, I mean Stone Sour’s “Though Glass” singing. The fact that the song “Snuff” was entirely acoustic sickened me somewhat. Don’t get me wrong I thoroughly enjoy acoustic music, however this is not Slipknots style and they have sold out. A little research showed I was not the only one who wasn’t too happy with this. Stephen Erlewine wrote in his review for ‘Allmusic’ that “when things do get a little softer a little later on, the album threatens to collapse like a soufflĂ©". Criticizing the album, Erlewine said, "One more power ballad like "Snuff" would be enough to derail the album." I agree wholeheartedly. Not only this, but the masks have changes, Corey cut his hair and now wears a leather jacket on stage rather than the normal boiler suit. All of this together might as well be a great big “Fuck you” to everyone who ever believed in what Slipknot stood for. I’ll let the lack of onstage antics slide, simply because the Slipknot boys are pushing their 40’s now, but in saying that I’ve seen Bruce Dickinson, in his 60’s with more energy than last year’s Slipknot concert.

In conclusion, Slipknot used to be a metal assault-and-battery on the hypocrisies of the modern world, now they have finally whored out their souls to the commercialised moneymaking machine that consists of boring, listless music. I pray to the Gods of metal that they pull a Metallica and come back from this sell-out shame. Despite all of what has been said, I will still always respect, cherish and love Slipknot and their (old) music for what they once brought to the world of metal.

Hello for the first time :)

Hello to everyone who reads this, most importantly probably my teachers and future employers. This is my music blog, at this stage I'm unsure as to what exactly I'll be writing, but as my title previews, there will most likely be some smack talk. So please don't take everything I say seriously, I'll try to offend as little as possible....

I'll hopefully be getting some reviews up here and whatnot, not mention I'll be ranting my opinion to the world about what I think on musical issues.

So continue to read on, especially if you fancy yourself a rock, alt or metal fan. I sway that way ;), but fear not, other music will not be completely excluded.

Tchau, peace out, rock on and happy reading!
